Glossary

  • Dynamic pass card holder

In Europark systems equipped with license plate readers, this refers to pass card holders who are identified only by the reading and recognition of the license plate on their vehicle.

  • P-sign

This lighted sign is located outside the entrance to show in real time the availability of parking spaces inside the car park.

  • Barrier Gate

This terminal is a simple physical obstacle to vehicle access, which is operated automatically from any access terminal.

  • Manual prepayment cashier

This is a manned terminal that reads the user's entry ticket and calculates and charges the parking fee, according to the information on the ticket. Once the payment is made, the operator gives the user a car park exit ticket or equivalent.

  • Manual exit cashier

This is a manned terminal that reads the user's entry ticket and calculates and charges the parking fee, according to the information on the ticket. Once the payment has been made the exit barrier gate opens automatically.

  • Automatic pay station

This is a terminal that, based on a previous reading of an entry ticket and according to the previously configured rates, enables automatic collection of the fee for the stay and generates a valid car park exit ticket.

  • License plate recognition camera

This picture-taking device is located at car park access points, next to the entry/exit terminals. It uses image analysis to interpret the characters on a vehicle’s license plate as it enters or exits a car park.

  • Central Intercom Station

This apparatus is used to manage and centralise the connection between the intercom telephone lines installed in the different car park terminals. The intercoms may be located at any exit/entry terminal, payment device (automatic or manual cashier), or pedestrian access.

  • Anti-passback control

Verification system that prevents consecutive, repeated entries or exits through an entry or exit terminal. This function prevents the shared use of a non-transferable pass card.

  • Ticket dispenser

This terminal issues the user with an entry ticket, which includes registered entry details such as the date, time, or entry identifier. If the dispensing operation is carried out successfully, the terminal then automatically opens the entry barrier gate.

  • Ticket dispenser / Pass card reader

This entry terminal regulates the access of identified vehicles to the car park, automatically controlling the related barrier gate manoeuvres. It includes both ticket dispensing functions (for rotation users) and card reading/validation functions (for pass card holders) in a single unit.

  • Europark

The comprehensive car park control and management system developed by Mabyc.

  • Hopper

A coin dispenser box found in automatic pay stations, used for returning change during payment operations.

  • Vehicle Detector Loop

This is an underground device located in front of all access terminals (exit/entry terminals and barrier gates) that automatically detects the presence or transit of vehicles passing over them.

  • Card Reader

This terminal identifies car park frequent users or pass holders by reading a specific magnetic card. If the card is read successfully, the terminal then opens the associated barrier gate automatically. Card readers may be located at the entrance or exit.

  • Optima

The Optima automatic guidance system for car parks is based on real-time car park occupancy control. It uses the information obtained to locate and indicate to users the location and shortest route to available spaces.

  • Indicator Sign

An indicator sign is a lighted sign that gives car park users information on the number of free/occupied spaces in an area, and guides the vehicles to the free spaces. There are 35 types of indicator sign, made up of a combination of up to 4 different modules.

  • Entry/exit Sensor

An entry/exit sensor is a volumetric, ultrasonic detection device that senses the presence and/or direction of travelling vehicles at the point at which it is installed. Entry/exist sensors can be uni- or bi-directional depending on whether they detect only vehicles that have passed by or whether they also detect the direction of the vehicles.

  • Space Sensor

A space sensor is a volumetric, ultrasonic detection device that logs, indicates and transmits the status (free/occupied) of the car park space it controls.

  • License Plate Control System (PCS)

This system enables the reading, recognition and automatic recording of vehicle license plates at the car park access points. The PCS is a good complement to the Europark system, as it adds capacity and dynamic access.

  • Card

This is a rectangular piece of thick cardboard or plastic with a magnetic stripe or with proximity technology that is used to identify registered users of a car park, such as pass card holders and residents. Cards are issued by the car park management office upon customer request.

  • Ticket

This is a rectangular piece of thin cardboard with a magnetic stripe that is used to identify infrequent users or rotational users of a car park. Tickets are automatically issued to drivers by the entry terminals when vehicles enter the car park.

  • Ticket alarm

These are rotation tickets marked with an alarm. They are issued by an entry terminal when it detects a vehicle’s failed attempt to enter the car park or when an error occurs in the detection of an entering vehicle. Alarm tickets are not accepted at automatic pay stations in the car park.

  • Parking agreement

This document formalises the contract for use of the car park between its owner and end users. Generally speaking, occasional users or rotational users of a car park use tickets, while frequent users such as pass card holders and residents use cards.

  • Central management and collections unit

The central management and collections unit consists of a computer system that centralises and manages the operations between all the car park elements: a PC computer (CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse), its peripheral devices (statistics printer, modem and UPS) and the Europark Client software.

  • Rotation user

    An infrequent car park user.

  • Pass card holder

A frequent user of a car park who is normally registered as a user in the system and who is assigned a personal means of identification.

  • Exit validator with payment collection

This exit terminal reads and validates tickets and cards, controls related barrier gate manoeuvres and accepts payment for the stay, all at the same exit.

  • Exit validator

The function of this terminal is to read and validate the exit tickets or any equivalent cards held by users. If the data is correct, the terminal then automatically opens the exit barrier gate.

  • Ticket validator / Pass card reader

This exit terminal automatically controls the related barrier gate manoeuvres and authorises the exit of vehicles from the car park after reading and validating tickets and cards.
